What Are NSAIDs? How Do They Work?

02/20/2018

NSAIDs- Nonsteroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs are a class of drugs formulated to relieve the recipients from pain. The specificity about these drugs is that they don't possess steroids. One fine example of NSAIDs which we all can relate to is aspirin.

Have you ever observed your instances of pain closely? Here is what happens:

Inflammation is evident where there's pain, if not on the exterior then on the interior, it's the response that our body generates. Redness, soreness, swelling, and pain tag along with inflammation. The mind needs to alert the body that there's inflammation in a specific region and it needs to be taken care of. This is why pain signals are sent to that region through complex communication between the cells and receptors.

NSAIDs are basically anti-inflammatory drugs which reduce the inflammation on the affected area which automatically decreases the pain.

Okay, that's probably very basic! Here is a more detailed version of how NSAIDs work!

How NSAIDs Work!

Drugs are complicated. And more than that, there's never just one version of any drug. Pharma constantly experiments and launch improved versions of any particular drug. So, NSAIDs comprises of various classes of drugs but each of that drug has some common effects:

  • They reduce the body temperature
  • Decreases inflammation
  • Eliminates pain

NSAIDs and Prostaglandins

Prostaglandins are the compounds in our body which are responsible for generating an inflammatory response. When you choose NSAIDs as treatment, these drugs slow down the rate of production of prostaglandins. The reduced generation of prostaglandins decreases inflammation and provide the much-needed pain relief.

NSAIDs and Cyclooxygenase

Okay, our body is so complex and it is quite interesting how it works. We discussed how prostaglandins produce inflammatory responses but what produces prostaglandins? Well, that would be cyclooxygenase (COX), the enzyme.

NSAIDs block these enzymes which in turn blocks the production of prostaglandins. But blocking COX enzymes affect the blood platelets making it an anti-clotting agent.

Where There are Drugs, There are Side-Effects

NSAIDs can increase your blood pressure along with many other things such as indigestion, headaches, dizziness, drowsiness, etc. Consistent use of NSAIDs can affect the working of your kidneys, liver, and heart.

So, What Should You Do If Pain Persists?

There are many alternatives to OTC drugs for pain and opting for natural alternatives is what we all must opt for. Oils, turmeric, etc. are some natural pain relievers.
